The idea of simplifying your life sounds good, but what does it mean? To me it means learning how to make life easier so that I can do all the “stuff” that I want to do. Seriously, if you find yourself complaining that times flies by too quickly, it may be time to give this some thought. Simplifying your life could be as “simple” as trying a new easy-to-care for hairstyle or letting someone else host Christmas dinner this year. Put on your thinking caps and come up with ways to carve out more time for yourself. Don’t dwell on whole house remodels or safety issues that you already have in place. Focus on simple ways you can save a few steps and make activities of daily living a breeze .For example: t reat yourself to a full set of OXO kitchen utensils (start with the best can opener and jar opener you will ever use and see if you don’t agree). Get rid of drawers full of mismatched gadgets that you have been accumulating for years. You don’t need a full arsenal now that you are cooking for just one or two. Make out your Christmas list and be sure to include pots, pans and bowls designed especially for people with “hand issues.” You can throw out a few hints about a new mattress or an easy chair that you can get into and out of easily while you are at it. Start by: • Making a plan • Subscribe to Arthritis Today magazine whether you have serious arthritis or not • Consider a grocery delivery service • Admit that you need occasional cleaning and maintenance help • Shop on-line Too complicated? Too expensive? Well let’s try something simpler yet: • Remote appliances (from tv controls to light switches) • A voice recorder that is easy to carry and easy to use (record grocery lists, addresses, appointments and reminders) • Reacher’s are for everybody and they are available in a number of styles and lengths • Taxi scripts if you don’t drive Simplifying isn’t about giving up things that you love, but about getting rid of the unimportant things that soak up your attention and your time. Use your time for volunteer work, luncheon dates, hobbies or just reading a good book. Feel free to share your ideas with others.
