Many people feel that they are too old to try new things. I found an article by Dalia Acosta (Noticia Financieras: Miami, Fla. October 5, 2007) that talked about the tools necessary for achieving an active and fruitful old age. I know that none of us like to think about old age; whether it is fruitful or otherwise, but perhaps it is time to do just that. The author wrote that after she retired she felt that her life was over. She felt completely useless as she tried to figure out what she could do with her acquired knowledge and training. She knew that she needed to do something to revive her interest and learn how to move on.
Most articles written about motivation and older people focus on diet and exercise. Both of these topics are vitally important for health and well-being, but I think you will agree that there must be something more.
The author examined older people who met this challenge by reaching out of their comfort zone. Many of them did this by going back to school to study issues that were important to them. She felt that participating in life at the university level was quite inspiring. She discovered that it was a good place to come to terms with life in this new stage. Most of us arrive at this new stage in life reluctantly and without a whole lot of prior preparation.
Senior Centers and Centers for Continuing Education provide a wealth of information on human development, preventive health measures, social security, and even talk about what to do with all of this new found freedom. The author tells us how she learned how to defend her space, and blot out her mind the fact that she was the oldest person in her household. There is more to life than just waiting around for it to be over. Human beings are never prepared for old age or for death. Old age is always something far away in the future. It isn’t a subject that people want to talk about so seniors are left to redefine themselves, and hopefully learn how to educate the next generation.
The idea, according to Curtis Ivery (Michigan Chronicle: Detroit, Mich. January 20, 1999), is to stay in the game and challenge yourself. Too many people feel they are too old to try something they have never done before and a result they miss out on some fine experiences. You can do anything! If you can walk, talk and move your hands you can begin swimming, playing the piano, singing, painting or learning a new language. You many never become a professional at any of these things but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the process. In addition to contributing to fun and friendship, pursuing new interests can change the way you look at things. It is never too late to reach out for new experiences.
It's an interesting and amazing post..thank you for the post...
