I am willing to admit that the term adjustable bed brings to mind thoughts of hospital beds, chronic illness, and old people. I still think they are a good idea and I was pleased to find an article in the Wall Street Journal (“Making Adjustable Beds Less Stodgy to Shoppers,” by Anjali Athavaley), about the lengths that mattress makers have gone to change that image.
A lot of us like to read, watch television, or even work from bed but it isn’t very comfortable. Complaints of sleepless, back pain and stiffness in the mornings are frequent topics of conversation, and we all know that the bed/mattress is usually the culprit. It is common knowledge that sleep can make a big difference in how you feel, which is why specialty beds (traditionally found only in hospitals) are making their way into our bedrooms.
Hospital type beds are usually rented or purchased only by people over 65, but you don’t have to be bedridden or elderly to think that their might be more to the adjustable bed than meets the eye.
Mattress makers don’t like it that their specialty beds are associated only with chronic illnesses, and are coining worlds like “power beds” or “lifestyle beds” to appeal to another crowd. Marketing research teams have discovered that people are using their bedrooms for a lot more than sleeping. Sleep experts shudder at the idea but most of us are guilty of reading in bed, eating in bed, watching TV in bed, or even just snuggling with kids or spouses. The demand is being met with new innovations in the world of bed design.
I like the idea of a yoga bed. Many (most) of us are waking up feeling stiff and sore in the morning, and stretching exercises become the first activity of the day (after a few sips of coffee, of course). One company has developed what they call a yoga bed. It can be adjusted to make the head and feet lower than the back to arch and stretch your body, wouldn’t that be nice? You can do your stretches before your feet even hit the floor.
New beds have adjustable bases that can move the bed into different positions via remote control. Think about a vibrating massage or even a snore feature (which allows people to raise their partners head elevation until the noise stops). If you try to read or use your laptop in bed you can appreciate that there is something very special about sitting in a bed that is propped, opposed to constantly stuffing pillows under your head, shoulders and back. Now adjustable beds are here for all of us, so you needn’t feel that you are over-hill because you want to splurge on some real comfort.
Adjustable beds are now increasing because of the services it can offer. The beds are comfortable and adjustable to your convenience.
