A common mantra heard in the
senior set is the saying “if I had known I was going to live this long, I would
have taken better care of myself.” Nobody wants to live to seventy, eighty,
ninety or even one hundred if their body is crippled or broken. You don’t
always have a choice, because people are living longer and are healthier than
ever before. You can choose to be
healthy and independent or you can choose to malinger in a care facility.
If you had known from the
beginning that you were going to live to be 90 or even 100 years, what would
you have done differently? Think about
it now. You would probably have examined
your health, your relationships, how you earned your living and even the friends
that you made differently. Life isn’t just about going through the motions.
Your health is probably the biggest issue because everything about you
hinges on how you feel about yourself, both physically and mentally. Eric
Plasker, D.C. wrote a book called “The 100 Year Lifestyle,” and he admonishes
people to love the age that they are in. I rather liked his philosophy. Love your age. It is yours and you need to make the best of
every day while looking ahead and feeling that the best is yet to come.
The fitness revolution is booming and a great deal of the focus is on
the importance of fitness as your
grow older. You already know all of the
reasons why you should be exercising, but are you doing it? Regardless of your current age or health
conditions, you need to do something to help yourself right now. You can still be in the best shape of your
life.
Dr. Plasker tells us that fitness is a decision. It is your decision. You have undoubtedly made a lot of poor
decisions in your life and you are probably already suffering the consequences.
You may indeed be one of those people
that the media is always talking about, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t
get your life back. Don’t wait until you
are 94 to lament that you should have taken better care of yourself.
The good news is that your
poor lifestyle choices haven’t killed you yet.
The bad news is that your body has adapted to them and all kinds of bad
things are going that will eventually wear you down. You may not like the way
your body has adapted but you are still alive. The human body is remarkably
adaptable and it will adapt again when you start making some subtle adjustments
Fitness
needs to be your top priority if for no other reason than you can’t afford to
be sick. Taking care of yourself will
keep you active and independent.
When you look at the top ten
leading causes of death, nine out of ten of them are preventable if you adopt a
healthy lifestyle. Lack of exercise and not eating properly are
the real culprits. Think about it! Live long and prosper!
