My favorite part of the day
is sitting down with a cup of coffee and paging through the newspapers. I must admit to being drawn to everyday problems
and articles about health and social issues before honing in on serious issues,
but feel no guilt in that.
The first article that I read was about the
fall fashions being paraded on the London
Ms. Gilman talked about the fashion catalogs
that depict people dressed in very expensive clothing for activities such as
beach walking and lounging around the house. Stores that used to make clothes for ordinary people
have decided that fantasy is better. The
models look carefree and stunning but they depict living in a dream world. Do real
people dress like that?
I agree with Gilman’s observations that no one
gets outfitted in fancy boots, designer jeans and cashmere sweaters to walk on
the beach. The catalog companies are as
out of touch with reality as many politicians. She goes on to ask what you should wear for
cutting coupons, delivering groceries to the food bank or searching for a job.
Looking at models walking a runway isn’t exactly
giving us a picture of what people are really doing. Perhaps teens can dream of such fantasies but
what about the rest of us who blanch at the idea of paying hundreds of dollars
for a pair of shoes? Harried housewives
and sensible seniors should be on the board of directors of some of these ridiculous
companies, but I don’t suppose there would be any money in that. Gilman concludes by saying that it would be
nice if catalogs would take a risk and depict clothing that is both sensible
and relevant to the way things are today. Aren’t you glad that you are older and wiser
now?
