Knitting isn’t just for seniors
of course, but we see fewer and fewer hand crafted items anymore and it is
rather sad. Maybe you are one of those
that think that there isn’t a place for little sweaters and booties anymore,
but you are so wrong if you feel that way.
An article in The Seattle
Times (March 1, 2009) discussed how far knitting innovations have come and
talks about knitting as a really creative and useful art form . Intrinsic patterns and new ideas have turned
sweaters and booties into a whole new adventure.
Many seniors know how to
knit and are actively involved in teaching young people the craft as well as
belonging to groups that knit for disaster victims all over the world. It is a great way to share their skills and
gifts with others, in addition to helping them keep busy it creates a sense of
well being and self worth as they create things to help people in need. Light weight knitting needles are available
to help people with arthritis and a good way to keep stiff fingers limber.
So, don’t let an ancient art
die out. Get out your needles and if you
don’t already knit or crochet take a class or sit at the knee of your favorite
senior. Go ahead; look for patterns that
turn out something more exotic than a beanie or a scarf. Actually, I learned how to knit when I was an
assistant leader in Girl Scouts. I have
not pursued it further but I am still (twenty years later) quite proud of the
green scarf that I made. What are you
working on?
