The word technology should
not be a “turn off” for seniors of any age.
Cheryl Walker (Herald, Tuesday, 0.4.14.09) pointed out that our
generation was around when radio and television were introduced to the world,
so there is no reason for us to be in awe of any new technology arriving on the
scene today.
Some of you are a little
apprehensive (and pretend disinterest) about computers and cell phones, but if
you think of them as products to make life easier it will calm your fears. Senior Centers all over the country are offering
computer literacy classes and the classes are small enough for a lot of individual
attention. The class I took had only two
students and we had a really good time.
Even folks who are house bound now have a way to stay in touch with
family, shop, order library books, read the news, chat or even play games.
Seniors make up one of the
fastest growing groups of internet users and they are finding it quite
liberating. Computer technology is a sure fired link between the generations; so
if you want to stay connected now is your chance.
Cell phones also have a
positive effect as seniors. Not only can
you call family members but you can call for emergency help if necessary, with
something small enough to carry in your pocket. Home gadgets ranging from key pad door locks
to electric doors are also making it easier for seniors to remain independent
in their own homes.
What do you think? Let’s have some comments from seniors about
modern technology.
