Whether you want to believe
it or not, people are living longer and are healthier than ever before. I have worked with seniors for 14 years and I
do get tired of the defeatist attitude that rears its ugly head as they decide
that they just don’t want to live anymore. Too boring, too much work, too tired is the
story I hear over and over. This is all
very depressing.
On the other hand, I feel
quite inspired by the accomplishments and excitement exhibited by some
seniors. The Herald ( February 16th,
2009) had an article by Shelby Martin about an 87 year old woman who not only
teaches an obscure Indian language at the University of Oregon but is herself a
doctoral candidate. Wow! This is life the way it should be lived.
This drew me to an article
in the New Scientist (June 3, 2006) about how to live to 100…and enjoy it. Most people think it is all about genetic
disposition but that isn’t necessarily so, it is just as much or more because
of the way we live. Scientists say that
a certain amount of stress is good for the body and of course the easiest way
to stress your body is by exercising. An
exercise regime designed to stress your body to just the right level to produce
that response is what you want.
Being social is another way
to add years to your life. Relationships,
marriage or even just having good friends or a pet are all recommended. Where you live or your environment accounts
for a good share of the everyday stimulation needed to enjoy a long life. Taking care of yourself or clean living can
go along way so chose your vices wisely.
This doesn’t mean giving up all of your vices either because pleasure is
good for you. Think of that glass of
wine or nibble of chocolate as self medication and enjoy it. You already know about exercising the little
gray cells. Everything from reading to
learning new things to interacting with people is the key. Smile and laugh. People with a sunny a disposition deal with
stress better, so if you are a natural Type A individual study t’ai chi, have
faith, meditate, study yoga and let the relaxation response take over. Take
care of yourself. If you are sick, see
your doctor. The stiff upper lip can
only go so far.
Last but not least is to
watch what you eat and get a life. Take
some risks, experience pleasure, be excited and you will reap the benefits.
